Who is Jesus Christ?
by Dionysos Maskaleris
My words spoken at Orinda Community Church Sunday December 30th, 2012.
For the fifth day of Advent and the lighting of the Christ candle.
Who was Jesus? Who is Jesus Christ to you and to me today and how can we honor the divine in each other and in everyone? [A good progressive Christian question] And who is Christ becoming in the future? If you Google the words: ‘The Historical Jesus’, you will find many books and schools of thought about the Historical Jesus. The book ‘The Quest for the Historical Jesus’ by Albert Schweitzer comes to mind but many have wondered and written about this before and since. The musical ‘Jesus Christ Super Star’, the book ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ by Nikos Kazantzakis and the post-apocalyptic science fiction novel A Canticle for Leibowitz though all fictional and blasphemous to many - they are personal but powerful interpretations of the Jesus myth. When I say myth I use the word not describing a falsehood but a myth as an allegory describing metaphorically a deeper more powerful truth then ‘just the facts mam’ – though in context the cabalists first studied the bible for 20 years before delving into the mysteries – form before spirit.
We create God in our own images – each age and each person. In growing up with atheistic parents in the counter culture counter mainstream religion 6o’s my discomfort with God and Jesus has been similar to the other side of the same coin of fundamentalist Christian upbringings. Dogma is dogma and rigidity is rigidity whether from the right or the left or from the religious or the secular. Jesus the man and Christ the divine energy has been and is an agnostic journey for me. Agnostic means not knowing. I am not an agnostic in the cynical skeptical sense but in the questioning reverence sense. I am in awe of the great mysteries of nature and physics. I love that many of the workings of the Universe are immeasurable and some will never be known completely. I don’t need to know everything. That there is pain and joy in this world is a terrible beauty. My intellect is powerless to the collective unconscious and my willpower is powerless to the ‘Still Small Voice’ that is in every star and atom – in every cell and being – all is divine energy.
For me Jesus and Christ besides as historical and intellectual wonderment - Jesus the man and Christ the God are living forms and moving energies – whether Jesus ever walked the Earth or whether there is a Christ consciousness, Jesus and Christ are present day living actions and feelings that manifest in our everyday lives. Faith without works is dead and works with love are alive. When my 30-year-old son died we suffered. How can Jesus teach us to sublimate our pain? It is human to say: “my God, my God why have you forsaken me?” [In the Aramaic: “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?”]. And it is divine to take my suffering and transform it to loving action kindness even in just breathing compassion or holding a suffering person’s hand. When people do loving actions I see and feel Christ energy. I feel loved. Not knowing the structure of God I am open to the manifestation of the divine energy through Jesus the man and Christ the being of Light. I see Christ returning as a woman as the divine feminine sings to my soul. We as a species are evolving – perhaps someday we will all be beings of Light. Jesus Christ is one of my teachers. I want to simply learn to be a kinder and a more loving person. Jesus came to teach us how to love like him. The reason Christ walked this Earth and touches us always is so we can better love. The Christ energy in you is teaching me to love. Namaste - the divine in me thanks the divine in you. I see the Native American Great Father and the Greek Gaia Earth Goddess in everything. I see the Christ energy in every human being. The Christ energy in you heals others and the Christ energy in you will save the world. I have spoken.
